Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) has made significant progress on the historic streetlights in the Town of Brighton. The project, which was originally announced in October, will see the Company replace six historic streetlight circuits in Brighton and the Village of Pittsford that have been in operation for almost 100 years and convert approximately 650 light fixtures to LED lights to improve safety for pedestrians with brighter walkways.
Since announcing the project in 2024, RG&E has already replaced multiple damaged light fixtures and is anticipating completing two of the six circuits by the end of 2025. The Company estimates the Brighton upgrades will be completed in 2028.
"These arc lighting circuits, while iconic and sentimental to the community, have deteriorated and become increasingly difficult to maintain due to the lack of replacement parts and outdated technology," said Kyle Duck, director of projects for RG&E. "RG&E recognizes the crucial need for modernization to maintain the lighting system's value to these communities, which are both highly walkable."
As lighting technology has developed over the past century, the availability of replacement parts and equipment to operate the existing system declined as many operators retrofitted their systems with new, modern technology. These upgrades will make it easier to replace parts, which will help reduce supply chain issues that can impact repair time.
In addition to replacing the fixtures while preserving the historical appearance and style of the circuits, RG&E's work scope includes installing new infrastructure, including transformers and manholes. RG&E will also replace heavily damaged poles, including historic fluted concrete poles.
