The Norwegian government is proposing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70 to 75 percent by 2035.
The Paris Agreement is working and has moved us in the right direction. At the same time, climate change is happening here and now. We are seeing its effects both globally and at home. That's why it's crucial to maintain momentum. We are now proposing an ambitious yet realistic climate target for Norway', said Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.
In 2025, all countries are required to submit new climate targets to the United Nations, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
Norway intends to include the new target in the Climate Change Act and formally submit it as a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris agreement following approval by the Norwegian Parliament.
The government's proposed climate target is to reduce Norway's greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70 to 75 percent by 2035, compared to 1990 levels. This builds on Norway's current NDC under the Paris Agreement, which entails at least a 55 percent reduction by 2030.
To set a high level of ambition for the new climate target, Norway will rely on a combination of domestic emission reductions, collaboration with the EU, and emission reductions outside the EU/EEA.
Our main approach will be to reach the target through national measures and collaboration with the EU. The Labour Party-led government is committed to an ambitious and realistic climate target that reduces emissions, creates jobs, and secures Norwegian competitiveness in the future', said Bjelland Eriksen.

This will place us among the most ambitious countries submitting targets under the Paris Agreement. We believe Norway should do its part, while also setting goals that challenge us to go further', said Bjelland Eriksen.
