NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR HYDRO
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro receives funding to expand takeCHARGE Isolated Communities Energy Efficiency Program

March 10, 2025

On February 12, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, along with the Honourable Joanne Thompson and the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, announced $2.7 million in funding through Natural Resources Canada's Green Industrial Facilities and Manufacturing Program (GIFMP) to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro). Hydro's Isolated Communities Energy Efficiency Program (ICEEP) and participating businesses will contribute an additional $400,000.

This funding will help expand ICEEP for manufacturing facilities, primarily fish plants, in isolated communities across the province. Over the next two years, Hydro will provide strategic energy management, energy audits and capital upgrades to participating facilities with the goal of reducing their energy consumption, electricity costs and greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining production capability.

Launched in 2012, ICEEP provides outreach, education and energy efficient products, along with energy efficiency and demand management opportunities to homes and businesses in 41 remote diesel-system communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. To date, the program has provided employment for 60 local residents, provided over 175,000 products free of charge to 9,800 residential and commercial participants and has successfully helped these communities save over 13 million kWh of electricity.

ICEEP is provided under takeCHARGE, a joint initiative between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. takeCHARGE combines the expertise and customer reach of Newfoundland and Labrador's two electricity utilities. Together the utilities work together to bring energy efficiency awareness and savings to the residents of this province.

"For over 10 years, our remote communities energy efficiency program has helped customers across Newfoundland and Labrador lower their electricity costs through improved energy efficiency. This new funding allows us to build on this success and expand the program in support of our industrial and manufacturing customers in isolated communities, as they look for ways to lower their electricity bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions."
