World Green Building Council to lead Buildings Breakthrough Priority Action 1

July 2, 2024

The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) has been given a crucial role in Buildings Breakthrough Priority Action 1, which focusses on Standards and Certification'. This work forms part of the Breakthrough Agenda which was launched at COP26 in Glasgow.

The announcement of WorldGBC's leading role in Buildings Breakthrough Priority Action 1 was made live by Simon Sharpe, Director of Economics, Climate Champions Team, during the Global Solutions Forum on 25 June, a flagship event which WorldGBC hosted during the Leadership Summit 2024.

The Buildings Breakthrough aims to facilitate international collaboration between governments and industry to deliver on the goal statement that "near-zero emissions and resilient buildings are the new normal by 2030". It was launched by the governments of France and Morocco at COP28 in Dubai, with the endorsement of 27 countries and the support of the European Commission

As part of this role, WorldGBC will convene a working group consisting of national Green Building Councils, key international organisations and countries to develop and build consensus in defining the common principles required for delivery of near zero emission and resilient buildings'.

Cristina Gamboa, CEO, WorldGBC, said:

"The Buildings Breakthrough provides a unique platform to bring the public and private sectors together to collaborate and accelerate towards our goals. With our global network of Green Building Councils (GBCs), WorldGBC is ready to draw on our collective expertise and build consensus to support the delivery of the Buildings Breakthrough. This collaboration will help accelerate international action on climate change to meet the Paris Agreement's goals, and deliver impactful outcomes by COP29, COP30 and beyond."
