In September the Horizon Europe project SETDEPLOY has officially been established to support the implementation of the EU's Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan in bioenergy and renewable fuels. The project aims to strengthen policy alignment, foster collaboration among stakeholders, and advance the EU's climate and energy targets for 2030 and 2050.
On 17-18 September 2025, the SETDEPLOY consortium held its Kick-Off Meeting at RISE in Gothenburg, Sweden, marking the official launch of the project. Over the next three years, partners will work together to accelerate the deployment of renewable fuels and bioenergy solutions, supporting Europe's clean energy transition.
SETDEPLOY builds on the foundation of its predecessor, SET4BIO-ETIP Bioenergy, to support the update and implementation of the SET Plan's Implementation Plan for Action 8. Through collaboration, innovation, and targeted stakeholder engagement, SETDEPLOY aims to strengthen Europe's renewable fuels and bioenergy sector while contributing directly to the EU's 2030 and 2050 climate objectives.
The SET Plan is a central instrument to support the transition towards a climate-neutral energy system through the development of low-carbon technologies in a fast and cost-competitive way. It fosters collaboration between European countries by aligning national research and innovation efforts, and supporting the development and uptake of low-carbon technologies.
- Action 8 of the SET Plan promotes research and innovation in bioenergy and renewable fuels to enhance performance, reduce costs, and cut emissions.
- It coordinates national and EU efforts to scale up advanced biofuels, biogas, and renewable hydrogen for sustainable transport and energy.
- These actions are fundamental to achieving the EU's renewable energy and climate targets, especially under new initiatives such as Fit for 55, REPowerEU, REFuelEU Aviation, and FuelEU Maritime.
With new priorities introduced by these initiatives, effective coordination and collaboration are more important than ever. SETDEPLOY addresses this need by fostering cross-country cooperation, aligning strategies, and enabling innovation across Europe.
The project employs a three-pillar approach that combines a practical toolbox of methodologies, cross-coordination, and stakeholder engagement. By integrating these elements, SETDEPLOY will act as a facilitator, supporting the deployment of technologies and solutions at scale while ensuring that policies and research efforts remain aligned.
SETDEPLOY's activities will engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including policymakers, industry actors, researchers, investors, standardization bodies, NGOs, local communities, and international organizations. This inclusive approach ensures that the project not only advances technical and policy objectives but also promotes societal acceptance of renewable fuels and bioenergy solutions.
About SETDEPLOY
SETDEPLOY builds on the success of SET4BIO to advance the SET Plan's Action 8, accelerating the deployment of renewable fuels and bioenergy across Europe. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and stakeholder engagement, the project supports the EU's 2030 and 2050 climate goals through coordinated efforts to scale up sustainable technologies. It serves as a catalyst to align policies, research, and investments for a climate-neutral energy future.
Partners
The SETDEPLOY project is coordinated by RISE (Sweden) and has a consortium um of 6 partners from 6 different EU countries: RISE Research Institute of Sweden (Sweden), SINTEF (Norway), CIRCE- Centro Tecnológico (Spain), EUREC The Association of Renewable Energy Research Centres (Belgium), ETA Florence Renewable Energies (Italy) and CSCP - Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production (Germany)
