Pertamina Unveils Modern Electrolysis Technology for Green Hydrogen Production in Ulubelu

September 12, 2025

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) (IDX: PGEO) began a new chapter in clean energy development in Indonesia by inaugurating the Ulubelu Green Hydrogen Pilot Project in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, on Tuesday (September 9, 2025). This facility is targeted to produce up to 100 kilograms of green hydrogen per day with an efficiency of 82-88% using modern membrane electrolysis technology (Anion Exchange Membrane/AEM), which is more environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and efficient than conventional technology.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk President Director Julfi Hadi emphasized that this project is a strategic stepping stone to strengthen Indonesia's position in the global clean energy supply chain.

"Through this project, PGE combines geothermal energy with modern electrolysis technology to produce efficient and sustainable green hydrogen. We want to make Ulubelu a center of innovation that can be replicated in other geothermal areas, while also opening up opportunities for use in low-carbon transportation and industry," he explained.

Julfi added that this facility will not only support the energy transition but will also encourage the downstreaming of derivative products.

"This groundbreaking marks PGE's first step in building a broader green business chain. Going forward, our roadmap includes the development of green ammonia and green methanol as energy solutions and raw materials for future industries," he said.

Through this step, PGE affirms its business transformation beyond electricity and beyond business, making geothermal the foundation of the clean energy supply chain while strengthening national energy security.

Pertamina's Vice President of Corporate Communications, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added,
The green hydrogen pilot project demonstrates the Pertamina Group's strategic role in supporting the national agenda towards energy transition.
"PGE, part of the Pertamina Group, is a pioneer in delivering geothermal-based clean energy innovations. The Ulubelu Green Hydrogen Project is an important contribution to supporting the government's 2060 Net Zero Emission target," said Fadjar.

The groundbreaking ceremony was also attended by Lampung Governor Rahmat Mirzani Djausal, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung, Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM Todotua Pasaribu, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Eniya Listiani Dewi, B.Eng., M.Eng., IPU, President Commissioner of PT Pertamina (Persero) Mochamad Iriawan, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Simon Aloysius Mantiri, Director of Projects & Operations of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy Norman Ginting, along with the board of directors, strategic partners, academics, and other strategic partners from within and outside the country.

With this groundbreaking, PGE marks the first step in developing a national green hydrogen ecosystem. The Ulubelu project not only strengthens Indonesia's position in the global clean energy supply chain but also represents a tangible contribution towards the 2060 Net Zero Emission target.
