NOVA SCOTIA
Province Drives Clean Fuels Innovation

May 27, 2025

The Province is supporting several green hydrogen projects in the second round of funding from the Clean Fuels Fund.

In all, seven projects involving clean fuels innovation were provided a total of $3 million.

"Nova Scotia is seizing the tremendous opportunities we have to develop and use low-carbon and renewable fuels to power our industries and businesses," said Energy Minister Trevor Boudreau. "Through the Clean Fuels Fund, we are providing a financial boost to innovators who want to put these fuels to work and help grow our green economy."

Examples of the projects include:

  • Innergex is receiving $793,000 to develop a hydrogen production hub called Osprey H2 in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The aim is to produce hydrogen for domestic customers.
  • Waterford Energy Services Inc. is also receiving $793,000 for a demonstration project to build a small-scale, mobile green hydrogen production facility. The aim is to create a facility that can be moved to different locations as needed.
  • The Municipality of the County of Richmond will use $221,250 to develop a clean fuels strategy for the Strait of Canso. The aim is to harness the significant green hydrogen potential for local heavy industry.

Other projects explore further potential for hydrogen to de-carbonize transportation and the use of biomass for heating and clean fuel.

The Clean Fuels Fund is Action 60 in Our Climate, Our Future: Nova Scotia's Climate Change Plan for Clean Growth. The plan aims to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for all Nova Scotians. It includes initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, switch to clean energy and transportation, create a clean economy, make homes and buildings energy efficient and able to stand up to the impacts of climate change, and help Nova Scotians adapt to the changing climate.

Quotes:

"We're grateful for the Government of Nova Scotia's support and proud to help advance the province's clean energy ambitions. With support from the Clean Fuels Fund, this will help accelerate regional green hydrogen production, which will drive emissions reductions, support Nova Scotia's climate targets and create economic opportunities through clean innovation."

Michel Letellier, President and CEO, Innergex

"We at Waterford are honoured and grateful to receive this funding that allows us to execute our project, which we began nearly two years ago. This project fits into our overall strategy of being a leading energy advisory based in Atlantic Canada. With experience developed from offshore oil and gas projects, we're now transitioning to renewable energy initiatives such as this green hydrogen project, offshore wind projects and being a key stakeholder in our nation's renewable energy aspirations."

Blair MacDougal, President, Waterford Energy Services Inc.

"Richmond County is extremely pleased to have been successful in our application to the Clean Fuels Fund. The grant will enable the county and our project partners to create a road map on how to decarbonize key areas of our local economy and attract new industries through the application and availability of locally produced clean fuels."

Lois Landry, Warden, Municipality of the County of Richmond

Quick Facts:

  • the Clean Fuels Fund was a two-year initiative totalling $6 million
  • the fund started in 2023-24 with $3 million for seven ready-to-launch projects
  • another $3 million from 2024-25 is supporting seven more projects
  • recipients were able to get 75 per cent of project costs covered if their costs were $500,000 or less; they could get 50 per cent covered if their costs were more than $500,000
