Eversource Partners with Agawam to Advance Green Community Commitment
Energy company installs town-wide electric vehicle charging stations; administering additional energy efficiency projects

September 21, 2020
Eversource and the Town of Agawam recently completed the installation of seven dual-port electric vehicle (EV) charging station sites at municipally-owned properties, including Agawam High School, Borgatti Park, Corey Street Bandstand, School Street Park, and Shea Field. The energy company was able to install these charging stations safely and efficiently while operating under its COVID-19 pandemic plan. This collaboration supports the town and energy company's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the commonwealth, 40% of which come from the transportation sector.

"We're thankful for our partnerships with towns like Agawam, which share our clean energy vision to reduce carbon emissions and help prevent the effects of climate change," said Eversource Electric Vehicle Program Lead James Cater. "While the pandemic has certainly changed life for us all, we're still committed to helping customers keep their sustainability and EV charging goals on track. Now that businesses are opening back up, we continue to actively work with municipalities and businesses to install electric vehicle infrastructure throughout the commonwealth."

Town officials received support from Eversource's EV Charging Station program to install the infrastructure that provides power to the EV ports. The program covers all costs for electrical infrastructure needed for the stations and manages the process from start to finish. Participating municipalities only have to purchase and install the charging equipment. Additional stations are located at the town's library and senior center.

"Since 2017, our town has implemented energy-saving solutions in our schools and municipal buildings in order to achieve and maintain the Green Community designation," said Agawam Mayor Bill Sapelli. "Thanks to our continued partnership with Eversource, we are now proud to be able to offer more EV charging access and further our goal of creating a clean, safe and healthy future. We hope these stations will help dispel range anxiety' fears, and we encourage residents and visitors to take advantage of them while they're around town."

The EV charging stations are the latest in a series of actions Agawam has taken to lower carbon emissions. In partnership with Eversource and Columbia Gas, the town has also implemented energy saving measures in several municipal buildings and is in the process of completing additional energy efficiency projects. Collectively, these projects will save Agawam almost $3 million in energy costs and reduce its carbon emissions by an estimated 1,200 tons annually, which is the equivalent of removing approximately 260 cars from the road.

As the trusted source for energy expertise, Eversource is working with municipalities and large customers throughout the state to coordinate the installation and connection of EV charging stations. Other installations to date include: the Towns of Becket, Medway, and Milton; the Cities of Cambridge and Greenfield; the Marine Biological Laboratory in Falmouth; and several Mass Audubon locations.
