BC Hydro has reached a major conservation milestone, surpassing 100,000 British Columbians who have committed to cutting their electricity use by 10 per cent through the Team Power Smart Reduction Challenge - an unprecedented surge in participation achieved in just two and a half months, marking the fastest growth in the program's history.
That is the equivalent of every person in Kamloops - or nearly two sold out BC Place crowds of Taylor Swift fans - deciding together to use less electricity. And the rewards for joining are bigger than ever.
With sign ups climbing past the 100K mark, British Columbians still have until January 31 to join the challenge and earn double the reward - $100 instead of $50 - when they successfully reduce their electricity use over the next 365 days. Combined, that could translate into up to $10 million in rewards on top of an estimated $10 million in collective bill savings if all current challengers reach their goal.
Prizes, perks and extra reasons to join:
To celebrate reaching 100,000 Reduction Challenge starts, BC Hydro held a contest in which every customer who began a Reduction Challenge was automatically entered to win a $1,000 London Drugs gift card. Now, the countdown is on for the next big milestone.
If total sign-ups reach 125,000 by January 31, BC Hydro will also award a $2,000 London Drugs gift card to one lucky participant who has started a 10 per cent Reduction Challenge between November 1, 2025 and January 31, 2026.
Team Power Smart members also enjoy exclusive year-round perks, including:
- Monthly contests
- Special deals
- Events like Team Power Smart Science World Members' Day
- Monthly tips, rebates, and offers to help you save energy and money.
For many condo and apartment dwellers, reducing electricity by 10 per cent equals about $100 in annual bill savings, which can cover a month or more of electricity costs.
Small changes, big impact
Cutting usage by 10 per cent is easier than most people think. Simple steps like switching to LED bulbs, sealing drafts, washing clothes in cold water, using a programmable thermostat or choosing countertop appliances instead of the oven can add up quickly.
With just days left until January 31, the Team Power Smart challenge has a blank space waiting - and British Columbians can sign their name at bchydro.com/jointheteam.
