Vattenfall Wins Trading Contract for Large German Offshore Wind Farm

August 24, 2017

Germany Vattenfall will optimise and trade 1,000 gigawatt hours annually of renewable electricity for a wind farm in German North sea.

T he Deutsche Bucht (DeBu) offshore wind farm project is a 252 MW wind farm in the North Sea west of Denmark and Vattenfall's newest direct marketing customer. This means that Vattenfall will promote and optimise selling of around 1,000 gigawatt hours of electricity per year after the project has been completed by the end of 2019.

Effective direct marketing operations are part of Vattenfall's core business. The in-house wind and photovoltaics forecast team prepares tailored forecasts for Vattenfall's own wind and solar operations, as well as for each direct marketing customer's site to optimise selling on the trade markets. By the end of 2016, the green power portfolio of Vattenfall Marketing had a capacity of approximately 4,400 MW, significantly more than Vattenfall's installed wind power capacity of 2,500 MW.

"Vattenfall is aiming for growth of its direct marketing portfolio for onshore and offshore wind power. As one of Europe's largest operators of offshore and land-based wind farms, we can offer our expertise in this area also to third parties as portfolio management contracts and Power Purchase Agreements (PPA)," says Anna Borg, Head of Vattenfall's Business Area Markets.

The 252 Megawatt (MW) project Deutsche Bucht is owned by the Canadian independent power producer Northland Power and currently in an advanced stage of development. The project, originally developed by British Wind Energy (BWE), is Northland's third offshore wind project.

"Over the years, Vattenfall has gained a sound expertise in offshore wind power thanks to its position as a large-scale offshore wind farm operator. That covers both the operation and marketing of offshore wind power", says Christine Lauber, Director of Sales and Origination Germany at Vattenfall Energy Trading.

Boris Balan, Vice President of Europe for Northland Power, said:

"Northland has enjoyed a positive and collaborative working relationship with Vattenfall since first engaging on the Deutsche Bucht project. We look forward to continuing to work productively together to maximize the value of the project for both ratepayers and stakeholders as we contribute clean, renewable energy into Europe's electricity grid."
