NEWFOUNDLAND POWER INC.
Victoria Hydroelectric Plant inducted into 2017 Hydro Hall of Fame

July 6, 2017

Newfoundland Power Inc. announced that its Victoria Hydroelectric Plant has been inducted into the Hydro Hall of Fame for 2017 by Hydro Review, a leading hydro magazine in North America. The induction took place at a hydro conference held in Denver, Colorado, this week. The Hydro Hall of Fame recognizes extraordinary hydro achievements throughout the world, with a special emphasis on long-lasting facilities.

"It is a tremendous honor to have our Victoria Hydroelectric Plant inducted into the 2017 Hydro Hall of Fame," says Gary Murray, Vice President of Engineering and Operations, Newfoundland Power. "We have a long standing tradition of proudly serving the people of this province since 1885, and this plant is an example of the role that we have played in the development of industry, business and community for more than 130 years."

The Victoria Hydroelectric Plant was the second hydroelectric plant built by Newfoundland Power and generated electricity for the first time on November 7, 1904. In 1907, a second turbine and generator similar in size was installed. As surrounding communities continued to grow, a third, larger turbine and generator were installed in 1914 to meet the increased demand for electricity and remains in operation today. These turbines are among the oldest in the province and in Canada. Today, the plant supplies approximately 550 kilowatts (kW) of power to the provincial electricity system.

"This plant stands as a monument to the entrepreneurs who started it, and to the engineers and trades people that built it over 110 years ago when the development of hydroelectric power was being pioneered," added Murray. "Today, our Victoria Hydroelectric Plant continues to provide clean, renewable low cost electricity."

During the 1980's, Newfoundland Power refurbished an unused portion of the plant and established a museum to display a permanent record of the beginnings and early stages of hydroelectric generation in the province. In 1985, the plant was declared a provincial historic site.

This is the second Newfoundland Power hydroelectric plant to be inducted into the Hydro Hall of Fame. The Company's Petty Harbour Hydroelectric Plant was commissioned in 1900, the first of its kind in the province, and was inducted into the 2003 Hydro Hall of Fame.

Hydro Review is the largest hydro industry publication in the market, providing information on all aspects of hydroelectric power generation as well as on issues and challenges encountered in the hydro industry.

Newfoundland Power is the primary distributer of electricity on the island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador, and purchases 93% of its energy needs from Hydro.
