Solar Power Demonstration Site Wins Sustainability Recognition Award

May 5, 2017

Saskatoon's largest solar power demonstration site has been recognized for its environmental and academic achievements.

"This award recognises the importance of the project and the hard work and dedication from government, community and academics," says Kevin Hudson, Sustainable Electricity Manager for Saskatoon Light and Power.

The Regional Centre of Expertise for Education for Sustainable Development recognizes the achievements being made to educate, encourage and engage others in making Saskatchewan more sustainable without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own energy needs. Twenty-five projects are being recognized at this year's event, including the Solar Power Demonstration Site.

"This unique project is a first step toward advancing clean energy in Saskatoon," Hudson says. "We now have a way to engage the community and students to learn more about the way this type of technology works in Saskatoon's climate."

The Solar Power Demonstration Site is a special partnership between Saskatoon Light and Power, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, the Saskatchewan Environmental Society (SES), and the SES Solar Co-operative.

The Solar Power Demonstration Site project is the largest solar power plant in Saskatoon with 92 solar panels generating up to 30.66 kW, providing 40% of the electricity needed to run the Landfill Gas Power Generation Facility where the panels are located.

The awards were presented today at Saskatchewan's only UNESCO designated biosphere, the Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve in Hafford.
