Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is starting the decommissioning planning process at the Nanticoke Generating Station site and is preparing for construction of the Nanticoke Solar Project in 2018.
Decommissioning includes the safe removal of buildings to brown-field the site. It will take about a year to remove - and where possible salvage - equipment and materials from the main powerhouse. Removal of the main buildings will not likely occur until 2018, however smaller buildings and structures will be removed over the coming year. The removal of structures will improve safety and security.
Earlier this year, OPG announced the site and lands adjacent to the site, would be the future home of a 44-megawatt solar facility being developed by Nanticoke Solar LP.
OPG generates safe, clean, reliable, low cost power for Ontario. More than 99 per cent of this power is free of smog and greenhouse gas emissions. OPG's power is priced 40 per cent lower than other generators, which helps moderate customer bills.
