Truck Operator (Lineman Assistant)

Description
Truck Operators assist in the construction of Transmission lines throughout the state of Georgia. This includes building foundations, steel structures, concrete pole lines, wood pole lines, truck operation, and ground help. This position is part of a statewide, traveling construction crew responsible for constructing new and replacing existing transmission structures and facilities. This is an entry-level physically demanding position that requires heavy manual labor . This position works four, ten-hour days and requires overnight and out-of-town stays during the week near the construction site (this means you could be away from home as many as 200 overnights per year) . Travel expenses, hotel expenses and meals are the responsibility of the Truck Operator and a per diem (daily allowance paid each day) is provided to help cover these costs. This position is covered under the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84 which includes an increase every six months until you max out in your job classification and a cost of living increase annually. This position is subject to call-out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience Requirements:

  • Training or experience in industrial maintenance or construction is highly desired.
  • Experience working outdoors in a labor intensive occupation is also a plus.
  • Experience in a physically demanding work environment and ability to work with all types of tools is desired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Training or experience in industrial maintenance or construction is a plus.
  • Familiarity with heavy machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting and industrial maintenance or construction.
  • Candidates should have a basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or a demonstrated aptitude for either.

  • All candidates must enjoy working outdoors in a physically demanding environment.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work at extreme (60 - 200 feet) height is essential to succeed in this position.
  • All construction jobs require extended overnight stays and travel throughout the state of Georgia.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must currently have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be able to attain a CDL within 6 months of employment. Valid CDL Permit strongly preferred (prior to hire). Note: The Dept. of Transportation (DOT) requires that we verify driving records of any candidate who holds a current CDL with their current and past employers, upon job offer.
  • To be considered for an interview, candidates must pass a pre-employment CAST test (basic mechanical aptitude) and a Physical Abilities Test.
  • A thorough background check, drug screening including a nicotine test, DOT Physical and a Medical Questionnaire will be required prior to employment.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Truck Operators will have the opportunity to bid into Apprentice Lineman positions in Line Construction provided all the necessary prerequisites are met which includes qualification on the required tests.

Apprentice Lineman in Construction will undergo an extensive training program, including classroom and on-the-job training. The training program lasts approximately 4 years. Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Lineman positions, as they become available.

Georgia Power Company has classified this position as "Safety Sensitive" and as such is subject to relevant pre-employment screening(s) to determine fitness for duty. Any offer of employment is contingent upon the applicant successfully completing all required fitness assessments.

Must be available to work assigned storm duty, which could include evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight travel.

Must understand the value of customer service and support.
