Description
Primarily responsible for system architecture and solution recommendations for all systems supported by Transmission Engineering->Transmission Engineering Services->Applications Solutions group. This position is a key point of contact for application development needs and coordination of document management system(s) and substation and line design solutions. This includes support of critical work processes and data related to Transmission Engineering for all operating companies. This position requires cross functional working knowledge with the Southern Company IT network, including; the IT Application Services COE (Center of Excellence), the Transmission Application Portfolio, and IT Client Services.

The position's activities include:

  • Determine technical needs such as hardware, software, scalability and security requirements.
  • Coordinate design and integration of overall architecture and parts of proposed systems with clients.
  • Translate business needs to develop solutions from design to technological product.
  • Oversee development efforts to ensure that product is delivered on time and to specifications.
  • Periodic application development, database administration, Unix system administration, Unix hardware maintenance, NAS infrastructure support, data acquisition and maintenance, QA/QC, and end-user training and support.
  • Provide technical leadership and 3 rd tier expert level maintenance for all areas of responsibility related to Transmission Engineering applications.

Education:

  • BS (or higher) in Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields of study strongly preferred. Advanced degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • High degree of knowledge in system design, architecture, security, system administration, processes and work practices related to Southern Company Transmission and its corresponding operating company functions.
  • Experience with a variety of programming languages, including but not limited to Java, SQL, Microsoft's .NET framework (v 1.1 thru current w/emphasis on C#), SOA (Service Oriented Architectures w/emphasis on RESTful architecture) and web development using JavaScript and ASP.NET.
  • Knowledge of Unix hardware, infrastructure, networking and remote shell access, and scripting using BASH, CSH, Perl is preferred.
  • A working knowledge of Classic ASP is a plus.
  • Continuous improvement mindset.

  • Basic project management and organizational skills (from project initiation and scoping through development and implementation).

  • General understanding of all Transmission and the interrelation between functions.
