Department Summary

The Enterprise Infrastructure Architect is a technology role within Consumers Energy (CMS).  The Enterprise Infrastructure Architect is expected to ensure that the overall infrastructure technology architecture is maintained in a coherent manner and that appropriate considerations are made for its security and quality. The primary role of the Enterprise Infrastructure Architect is to ensure that the infrastructure technology investments are in line with the organization's technology and governance strategies, policies and standards.

The Enterprise Infrastructure Architect is responsible for managing the CMS technology platform strategy and value realization from CMS platform investments which include management and monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), capacity, adoption and lifecycle plans.

You will provide innovative strategic technology direction and leadership to the business, practical oversight of technology projects, and leadership in the planning and implementation of the entire technology base.

This role will guide company decision-making relative to the use of appropriate technologies; timing for broad exploitation; timing to exit existing technologies; and will influence strategic partners in the direction that benefits CMS and meet business needs.

You will be a member of the Enterprise Architecture team and will be a key contributor in executing the a consensus-based, participatory planning process that identifies and documents functional business area activities, data that supports those business activities, applications used to manage that data, and technologies necessary to support business processes.

Job Description/Responsibilities

  • Develop current state physical and logical architecture documentation and keep it up-to-date
  • Extend IT and EA architecture principles for the infrastructure domain
  • Lead the development of technology standards and their ongoing revisions
  • Develop 3-5 year target infrastructure architecture based on business architecture roadmaps, current state assessment, industry trends and the Consumers Energy research agenda
  • Develop an implementation roadmap to reach the target state in a well-planned manner that maximize business value and minimize disruption risks
  • Consult on IT projects when enterprise standards don't exist or are not meeting business needs or the complexity warrants it
  • Lead the assessment of new technology and how they can be effectively introduced to the enterprise
  • Participate in the optimization and ongoing operation of the architecture governance process
  • Define metrics to measure and demonstrate EA value
  • Communicate the value of Enterprise Architecture to business and IT stakeholders
  • Provide architecture input into the following activities:
    • Business Risk Management
    • Risk/Return Analysis
    • Information Security Management
    • IT Risk Assessment
    • IT Risk Management
    • IT Security Management
    • IT Procedures and Policies Formulation

  • Exposure to operational technologies like Control systems and SCADA is desired but not mandatory
  • Ability to collaborate with and direct other technologists to ensure synergies across the team
  • Ability to solve problems with innovative ideas to affect change in CMS environments as a result
  • Analyzes system requirements and ensures that systems will offer security and will be effectively integrate with current infrastructure and applications
  • Performs a variety of tasks. Self-starter. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to top management
  • Experience in the development and rollout of enterprise standards
  • Conceptual understanding of:

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or related technical discipline
  • 8 or more years of applicable experience
  • IT infrastructure architecture experience including Converged and hyper converged infrastructures
  • Complete technical architecture: Deep expertise in two or more technology domains (compute, storage, networking, cloud and end user computing) but fluency in all technology domains
  • High degree of familiarity, fluency, and experience with modern infrastructure technologies such as Cloud, BYOD, Software Defined Data Center, IaaS, PaaS, Shared Nothing architectures
  • Expertise in several soundness disciplines (TOGAF, recovery and availability, security, etc.) and operational disciplines (systems management, change management, etc.)
  • Previous experience with solutions architecture in infrastructure domain

Essential Functions

Works closely with the technology domain to define platform standards and advises and recommends enterprise architecture strategies, processes and methodologies.  Recommends and participates in the analysis, evaluation and development of enterprise long-term strategic and operating plans to ensure that the EA objectives are consistent with the enterprise's long-term business objectives.  Shares best practices, lessons learned and constantly updates the technical system architecture requirements based on changing technologies, and knowledge related to recent, current and up-coming vendor products and solutions. Participates in and manages Architecture Working Groups for the development and maintenance of the EA.  Collaborates with all relevant parties in order to review the objectives and constraints of each solution and determine conformance with the EA.  Recommends the most suitable technical architecture and defines the solution at a high level.  Recommends and participates in the development of architecture blueprints for related systems.  Identifies and recommends areas appropriate for further study and participates in any Proof of Concept projects required to thoroughly investigate architectural possibilities and strengthen arguments for their adoption.  Identifies implementation risks and analyses potential impact on the enterprise and on the achievement of scheduled objectives.

Position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade based upon the skills, knowledge, and experience of the selected candidate.
