Description
NOVEC is currently recruiting for someone to join the Risk Management team as a System Safety & Environmental Compliance Specialist.  This position will be responsible for maintaining safety accreditation, compliance with EPA, DOT, VOSHA and VDEQ regulations.  This person will also administer the workers' compensation program to include modified duty assignments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES will include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Conducting safety meetings for all NOVEC employees, including:  planning, developing, implementing and administering accident prevention and job training.  Conducting the following training courses:  first aid, defensive driving, pole-top rescue, CPR, new employee orientation, accident investigation, electric hazard, eye safety, and fire prevention. 
  • Handling and maintaining integrity and confidentiality of highly sensitive human resource and management information records.
  • Monitoring and coordinating the motor carrier regulations for the cooperative.
  • Administering NOVEC's random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Conducting incident investigation and documentation for all forms of incidents (vehicular, property damage, work procedure errors).
  • Performing jobsite work/equipment inspections.
  • Directing the shipping and cleanup of hazardous wastes, lead paint and asbestos abatement to ensure that NOVEC is in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Coordinating the work activities of NOVEC environmental consultants.
  • Investigating general liability claims against NOVEC and working with Risk and Security Manager to recommend course of action.
  • Preventing and reducing accidents by studying accident reports; establishing causes of accidents; recognizing trends in types of accidents; coaching supervisors and employees; and publishing accident-prevention information.
  • Addressing environmental issues by identifying short-term and long-term areas that must be addressed; providing information and commentary pertinent to deliberations; recommending options and courses of action; and implementing directives.
  • Identifying and anticipating safety and health concerns and hazards by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions; rendering opinion on new equipment and procedures; investigating violations; and recommending preventative programs.
  • Working continually towards self-development to maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; and participating in professional societies.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in a related occupational safety and health, business or engineering discipline from an accredited institution is required or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Five to seven years of related experience and/or training is required. Preferred certifications include: Associate in Risk Management, Certified Utility Safety Administrator and Advanced Safety Certificate. Other preferred qualifications include: Advanced First Aid/CPR Instructor.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated ability to function independently in a multi-task environment, as well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all company policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and mathematical skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with general computer operation and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with all levels within the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and meet rapidly changing customer and business needs by quickly refocusing and realigning strategic and operational direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to think ahead and plan over a short and long-term focus.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply accident investigation techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to use available resources to deliver training to members of the organization.

OTHER COMMENTS:

  • Must be able and available to work weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, and other times outside of standard work hours to assist in service restoration, emergencies that may arise, and necessary business operations.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, an acceptable driving record over past seven years, and be able to operate company pool vehicles as necessary.
  • Must maintain a telephone at his/her place of residence or personal communication device at all times.  Ability to contact telephone or personal communication device must be made available to NOVEC for the purpose of contacting the employee to conduct legitimate routine and/or emergency business.
