Job Summary:

The person in this position provides expertise for the completion of capital and/or maintenance projects in the Instrument Design discipline in order to ensure safe, economical, constructible and maintainable designs. 

Responsibilities:

  • Designs instrument systems that are safe, reliable, economical, constructible, and maintainable in accordance with Dow standards and work processes. Systems will include both new installations and modernization of existing facilities. Systems will incorporate multiple areas of instrument technology.
  • The Instrument Designer is responsible for all instrument aspects on capital and expense projects.
  • Develops scope, cost estimate, schedule, design strategy and determines resources needed on instrument projects.
  • Preparation of basic specifications detailing performance requirements, specific components, design requirements, applicable design codes, and vendor drawing requirements.  Prepares documentation to inquire and requisition instruments.
  • Preparation of project schedules, wiring and loop diagrams and details necessary for instrument installation. 
  • Markup and modification of P&IDs for Instrument details
  • Uses instrument computer design tools including Microstation to create detailed design drawings and documentation used for construction and bid packages.
  • Has the ability to plan and organize work effectively while working on several projects simultaneously.
  • Has basic knowledge and understanding of engineering sizing and selection tools.
Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of instrument design experience.
  • The individual shall be motivated with the experience and ability to lead projects in the instrument discipline with minimal direct supervision.
  • The individual must be physically able to do fieldwork in an operating chemical plant, which includes taking field measurements and climbing stairs and ladders.  Work in a petro-chemical environment where hard hat, respirator, eye protection and safety harness could be required for fieldwork.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and have the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills are required.
  • Strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills. 
  • Able to understand, analyze, and resolve technical problems in work area. 
  • Have a desire to learn and develop technical skills to keep current with changing operations. 
  • A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills - inspire others and lead them through influence.
  • Able to work within an empowered team environment.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Have a high regard for personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Minimal travel required to support project needs through occasional business trips.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Have a current, valid US driver's license.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.  No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or higher in Vo-Tech Industrial Instrumentation or Process Technology degree. 
    • In lieu of a degree, Dow Chemical will consider those with 4 or more years of relevant military experience. 
  • Instrument / Electrical construction or maintenance experience.
  • Microstation drafting experience.
  • SmartPlant Instrument experience (Data sheet and wiring modules).
  • Instrument Construction and commissioning experience.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
